The authors point is that the two codices are not directly descended from each other (neither is a copy of the other, or of a copy of the other). This means that their use of identical colour suggests that colour choice was bound by set conventions. e.g. "The Digby MS thus provides a form of the text which belongs to a tradition different from, and independent of, that represented y the a versions. Of the two traditions, that contained in the Digby MS is certainly the older." from La Chanson de Roland ed.
