traditional costume jewelry Explanation: Literal, but should be correct. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 32 mins (2004-06-24 22:33:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- the Granteln are the eye teeth from red deer stags. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 34 mins (2004-06-24 22:34:48 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- red deer are somewhat similar to our (US) elks. They are considerably larger than the European roe deer and even bigger than fallow deer. Hunters always remove the eye teeth from which jewelry is made. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 36 mins (2004-06-24 22:36:35 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- The older the elk the older and more prized are the eye teeth. Als weidgerechter Jaeger habe ich selber etliche Hirsche erlegt. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs 35 mins (2004-06-25 02:35:30 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I would be inclined to leave Granteln in German and put eye teeth of deer in parentheses behind it. |
