Frankly neither am I, but then I don't know much about acoustics or air conditioning.

Perhaps orchestras, choirs, etc. also tended to avoid this venue.

I am also not quite sure how air conditioning would have improved the acoustics of a concert hall...

Wenn diese Wörter in dem selben Satz auftreten, handelt es sich nicht um die Akustik.
Vielleicht war es zu warm/zu kalt in dem Theater/Konzertsaal und deshalb kamen nicht so viele Leute zu den Konzerten. Nachdem man aber eine Klimaanlage eingebaut hatte, kamen wieder mehr Konzertbesucher. So würde ich den Satz verstehen. Einen Vorschlag zur Formulierung in Englisch habe ich noch nicht.

... because "bespielbar/Bespielbarkeit/Bespielung" is also often used in a more general sense (along the lines of "usability", "fitness for (various) use(s)"), for instance in relation to museum buildings. Hence I'm not sure if your example is strictly related to acoustics.
