German term or phrase: Schliffebenenlage
Scientific paper, source language is German, target language is English. Subject matter is preparation of metallographic specimens. Target readers are mostly materials scientists and engineers but also academic people and students. There is little or no helpful context. A typical sentence in which this term occurs:

"Die Schliffebenenlage verläuft parallel zu Bruchfläche XYZ knapp unterhalb der Bruchfläche."

The term refers either to the status (Lage) or the actual position (Lage) or the prepared layer (Lage) of a ground / polished test specimen.

I would eliminate the status as a possibility, but the engineers who write this type of text, though extremely smart in facts, are sometimes quite weak in expression of those facts. In other words, the German can be very bad, and probably is.

I can put together any number of convincing but ambiguous terms that would be acceptable but vague or unclear. However, my interest is accuracy and clear understanding for the reader. I have come across this term before but never really knew what to call it.

My best shot is "grinding/ground/polished (surface) layer" or "the prepared/ground layer of the metallographic specimen" but I am looking for something standard, and shorter. I have even asked the authors, who seem to think it's not important and don't have any suggestions better than mine. The term doesn't appear very often in search engines, either. So thanks in advance for any help. I would welcome an answer in either English or German.

English translation:location of grinding plane
Explanation:
Sounds to me like they mean the location of the grinding plane. So the plane/layer that will be the surface once the metal is ground down.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. While "inspection position" is a good formal answer, yours is the one which actually tells me what I'm talking about. :)
