Explanation:
As the the metal tip of a stiff guidewire is prone to puncture/perforation of the (arterial) vessel wall on insertion into the lumen, the pigtail catheter (soft/elastic) with its typically round ("pigtail-shaped" tip portion serves as a sheath and hides the comparably sharp end of the guidewire. After deployment of the guidewire to the intended site it can be retracted/withdrawn to allow for the insertion of other devices (ballon catheters, stents, closure devices...). Thus, it protects the metal tip (and the patient) form arterial perforation and subsequent bleeding.

Thanks, I had to put 'protected' in the end as this seemed clearly to be what was intended by the author. Although that exact phrasing does not seem to be used in English, it is understandable.
