German term or phrase: Kulturland
I'm sometimes not sure what to leave in the original German. In this case, no further context, just a list.

Kulturland Oberösterreich (which I've translated as Upper Austria)

In the same vein, I've got
"Landesmuseum Linz", would you translate that as "Linz State Museum" or leave it alone?

and

Landesmuseen = Landesmuseums/State museums??

Thanks for your thoughts.

Upper Austria - at the Heart of European Culture
Explanation:
Let's face it: "Kulturland Oberösterreich" is a bit of a yawn, so why not expand ?

I hope no one takes offense about awarding the Kudoz, all of your combined input was what helped. I went with Francis "Cultural Heritage Centre" and TonyTK's suggestion of leaving it in the German.

agree  Robert Schlarb: On second thought, "Land" is being used less as a politcal categorie than as a socio-cultural term (e.g. Heimatland) and "province" sounds too provincial
24 mins

agree  Francis Lee (X): doch doch, Robert; everyhwere on the planet can be a "land" (whether of milk and honey" or "Bavaria: a land of beer-drinkers and closet fascists")

it's not a land......

personally I\'d keep Oberösterreich in the title at least and introduce it as Upper Austria somewhere in the text. that\'s just my opinion. Leave the name of the Museum in German-it\'s a provincial museum. this is a province of Austria....

agree  David Moore (X): "Province" is the official designation of the Austrian "Länder"
1 min

neutral  Lancashireman: 'province' has unfortunate connotations for an English reader. 'provincial' = 'lacking cultural flair'. And you are quite right that it would be discourteous to enter a comment to what a peer has said without reading it first.
6 mins
-> If you read what I wrote, I was only explaining it to Asker-I wouldn't use the word provincial either./didn't mean to sound rude-am not insinuating you didn't read it (maybe just a tiny hint that you misread it? :-) )

agree  Laura Terrett

neutral  Francis Lee (X): nothing wrong with gfish's "land", and "province" just sounds outdated in modern Europe (something the Upper Austrian authorities possibly don't know) // with all respect, Silvia, surely it's more important what WE call your Bundesländer?
7 mins
-> a land in English is a country-Austria has provinces-the word is outdated? France and a few other countries better be notified immediately.... borders are now obsolete in the EU but countries still have them :-)

neutral  Robert Schlarb: Although "Bundesland" = "Federal State", here we tend to translate "Land" one way or the other; on the other hand, "province" does not cut it well
7 mins

agree  silvia glatzhofer: yes, we still call our Bundesländer provinces; on the official website of Upper Austria, the Landesmuseum is called Landesmuseum
10 mins
-> agree-that's why I said to leave it-translating names of museums is rarely a good idea

agree  msherms: fine - to avoid the issue you could just write Upper Austria - a rich cultural heritage or rich in culture or something like that without mention of province/landscape is OK too IMO
59 mins
-> also a good way out. Asker wants a 'thing'-a rich cultural landscape?

agree  TonyTK: Hi Ho Silver Lining (Jeff Beck, peaking at No. 14 in May '67) - Your suggestion combined with msherm's comment - "Upper Austria - a region rich in culture"

Upper Austria - a region of culture

Explanation:
Lots of people seem to have time at the moment - so just to keep the debate going.
"Landesmuseum" is a regional museum.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
neutral  Robert Schlarb: That is not exactly the meaning of Kulturland; "heart of Europen culture" entirely limits the intention.
6 mins
-> but it's only a title, which will have to be rendered differently in English // I see it more as liberating than limiting

neutral  BrigitteHilgner: "At the heart of European Culture" - that's a bit of a joke, as far as Upper Austria is concerned!
38 mins
-> of course it is, Brigitte - but that's not the point!

agree  msherms: I don't see why you couldn't use this - but having spent much time in Linz and Upper Austria (my husband inherited a house there), I may be partial. It is catchier than the other options! think it is nec. to exaggerate a bit in English advertising

Explanation:
*if" it's about the organisation called "Kulturland Oberösterreich"

Or "the Kulturland Oberösterreich organisation" if it's in a sentence. Most people wil understand the "Kultur" bit.
