German term or phrase: Mittelwellen-Sucher
"Schon die Beschriftung der Mittelwellen-Sucher alter Radios erzählt geheimnisvolle Geschichten aus London, Paris, Athen, Budapest, Brüssel und Rom."

I'm not all that familar with old radios and am not sure what "Beschriftung der Mittelwellen-Sucher" would be called in English.

Any ideas and suggestions very much appreciated.

All the best

the legend on the tuning display

I wouldn't put medium wave Ian, because obviously all the foreign stations were on long wave. I think that's an author's bloop.

(There were always weird names like Beromunster (CH) Kalundborg (DK).
The romance of it all.

I have just been in discussion with a friend who is a radio freak. The correct answer is:
Tuning scale - for a long one i.e. the rectangular radios. old hi-fi\'s and some square ones.
Tuing dial - for the square and dome-shaped radios with a circular \"sucher\".

The only question is which were more popular??? ;-)

I would risk a guess that tuning dials would be adequate...

neutral  Textklick: If he's painting pictures of the old days the word MW would be used rather than AM IMO.

agree  Jonathan MacKerron: perfect; or "AM/MW dial"?
2 hrs

agree  Lori Dendy-Molz: We collect old European radios, and we actually still listen to "MW" on them. Unless British English also used "MW" for "AM", I'd go with this.

-> Thanks Guenther. I didn't know you got MW intl. at night because I was already in bed, listening to Radio Luxembourg ;-)

agree  Klaus Herrmann: As matter of fact, I remember having a short wave receiver with all those fancy station names. Whatever the wavelength, tuning display is just fine IMHO.

agree  Michael Pauls: My favourite was Banska-Bystrica. Never managed to tune in to that station, though.

neutral  Jonathan MacKerron: if you look at an old radio you'll find that the AM dial has many place names, whereas LW only a few!

Explanation:
we have AM radio (Mittelwelle) and FM radio (shortwave). If you want to capture stations from around the world, you buy a shortwave transmitter (actually ultra shortwave, but everybody calls it just shortwave)

neutral  Kevin Fulton: FM is UKW (88.x - 107.x MHz) , not what is commonly called short wave in the US

-> UKW is FM, but that's Kurzwelle, n'est pas? May have not been my brightest moment sermonizing

neutral  Textklick: Mensch Klaus, wenn FM shortwave ist ist, dann heiss' ich Meier! ;-)

-> If you promise to always agree with me in the future, I'll upgrade you from Mensch Meier to Beyer jun.
