As opposed to Fachpresse. Consumer press? Embarassingly enough, I'm not sure what the term for "normal" media is! ;-)

Thanks a lot!

Hilary.

I was torn between this and mass media, but in this context I needed a counterpart to "trade press", and this fits nicely. Thank you all!

Explanation:

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for your answer, Brigitte! I think Steven is right, though - popular media can be divided into general-interest and special-interest, where special interest is still distinct from "trade". This applies particularly to magazines.

agree  Steffen Walter: Ich dachte auch zuerst an "general-interest press/publications".

  -> Danke schön, Steffen.

disagree  Steven Sidore: I believe that general-interest is a genre of popular press--publications like The NY Times or Der Spiegel that are broad but not deep, versus popular press publications or broadcasts that explorer a specific subject--i.e. Kicker magazine (football)

  -> Any proof for this belief? According to you, "Kicker" is a "Publikumsmedium" but Der Spiegel isn't? Into which category does Der Spiegel belong? I am not sure that you understand the German expression correctly.

neutral  Francis Lee (X): w/ Steven. "general-interest press" is not the counterpart of the "trade press". His example is a good one IMO.

Rather than press. Could include Internet as well, where they do call them Anzeigen. Covers you for all eventualities.
