Any ideas (other than "guide" which I use for "leiten") much appreciated! TYFYHIA

take by the hand
Explanation:
I reckon you can get away with being quite literal here, possibly with a bit of extra padding: "Orientation systems (are designed) to take us/(the visitor) by the hand in such situations, ..."

an die Hand nehmen 'aid or provide us with a point of reference'

Explanation:
Two alternatives, short or provide us with a point of reference for such situations descibes their function in detail for all those wanting to know about Orientierungssysteme.

lead the way

Explanation:
I quite like the literal translation as well, but maybe this is also a typical phrasal way of saying what is meant...

neutral  Francis Lee (X): hmmm ... I'd say a human tour guide would "lead the way"; perhaps "show (us) the way"?"

to provide directions

Explanation:
Not sure whether "Orientierungssysteme" (a thing) can provide directions. I would not use the "hand" example here.

help ... navigate (their way)

Explanation:
- orientation systems help visitors navigate (their way) / provide navigation
- navigation systems/guides provide orientation ...
Seems that in North America, "navigate" can be used intransitively:

"Examples of interactive exhibits include a multimedia display, where visitors can navigate their way around the available information"
