German term or phrase: Ergänzungsziffer
Hello! I'm having a mental block on "Ergänzungsziffer" in the following sentence - can anyone help?

"Die Kennzeichnung besteht aus der Maschinennummer und einer Ergänzungsziffer."

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hilary ;-)

check digit/complementary number
Explanation:
normally serial numbers or any important numbers for that matter have a built in control-mechanism, which is called a check digit. This is normally "Prüfziffer" in German, but I think that's what they might mean. If that doesn't seem to fit, then try the 2nd version or else "end(ing) number", maybe. Good luck! ;-)

I went with "check digit" in the end, but referred it to the customer - i think it would vary wildly from company to company, etc.
