German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Manufacturing / product dervelopment
German term or phrase: A-Muster, B-Muster
General context: PP presentation by a German UPS manufacturer

In the discussion of the product development phases, they refer to the 'A-Muster', 'B-Muster' etc. (which they have in part 'pre-translated' as 'A-Sample', 'B-Sample', etc).

I know this terminololgy is widely used in the German car industry, and AFIAK it designates different sorts of prototypes. So far I can't find any (google) evidence that the alphabetic designations are used in English.

Are there any standard definitions (and even better, English equivalents) for the terms?

Thanks. I decided to use 'design prototype' and 'pre-production prototype' (since I also had to deal with the 'Musterphase').
