to give (top) priority to similar situations/incidents/etc. Explanation: I think your rendition of "vor der Klammer ziehen" as "to give (top) priority to" is good (cf. http://www.proz.com/kudoz/731339). My first thought was "to treat independently," but... But the German word "Gleiches" makes this a really difficulat question. I'm not aware of an English word (or even set of words) that can do justice to the word "Gleiches," which - as you probably already know - expresses the idea of at least two 'things' that are similar. In thinking over possibilities I notice that we (English-speakers) always name the things that are similar (even if we just name them "things"). In a sentence I would try to find a way to work around it. It's kind of difficult here because it's a bullet point. You have the rest of the context, so you're in the best position to say what "things" they are referring to here. Managers often have to deal with "situations" or "incidents" that may be similar, so I chose that, but like I said, you'll know better. Maybe the others will come up with something better. :-) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 28 mins (2005-04-20 21:09:49 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- How about \"parallels\" - not all that great, is it? I found these researching synonyms for the word \"synonym: Main Entry: equivalence Part of Speech: noun Definition: sameness Synonyms: adequation, agreement, alikeness, compatibility, conformity, correlation, correspondence, equality, evenness, exchangeability, identity, interchangeability, interchangeableness, likeness, match, par, parallel, parity, similarity, synonym, synonymy Antonyms: difference Source: Roget\'s New Millennium™ Thesaurus, First Edition (v 1.1.1) Copyright © 2005 by Lexico Publishing Group, LLC. find the common denominator, extract the similarities Explanation: I don't think that the phrase means to give top priority to whatever the similarities are. That might be a result, but it is not in that phrase. By employing the mathematical expression of "etwas vor die Klammer ziehen" they want to suggest that if two departments or business sections show the same structural properties (let's say processes could be sketched with the same type of flow chart) then an attempt should be made to use the similarities for managerial decision-making instead of re-inventing the wheel over and over again. In this sense, they are looking for "Synergy" (saving effort/costs by using the same procedure for apparent diversity as long as the similarities can be destilled). |
