Enteuropäisierung
some ideas

Explanation:
Yes, of course the above answer is perfectly correct. However, I think the real problem is how to work ‘Mittel’ into the translation. Here are some ideas for you to play with:

… no longer see Hungary solely in terms of Central Europe
… disassociate Hungary from its old Central European image
… rid/purge Hungary of its old Central European stigma
… redefine Hungary away from its narrow Central European image

hope it helps

agree  urbom: yes, the above answer ignores the "mittel" (as does the question, too!). More elegant to rephrase in English than stick rigidly to source syntax.

  -> indeed

agree  Armorel Young: it could well be that Hungary very much wants to be europäisch but doesn't want to be stereotyped as typically mitteleuropäisch

agree  Trudy Peters: Very nice solutions, Nicole. You went the extra mile! Ilse should have posed the entire term as a question.

agree  Christina Emmanuilidou: yes...I was about to agree with Trudy's suggestion, but then had a second look, and a second thought. I think you are right!!
4 hrs

agree  Terry Gilman: Definitely something along these lines. Without context, I'd go with the first one; the title or phrase may be meant in a negative way, but perhaps not.
6 hrs

agree  Mario Marcolin: on the right track, though I guess Mitteleuropa might even imply the Austro-Hungarian double monarchy :)
