In den sechziger Jahren protestierte Wang gegen die Kulturrevolution. 1976 musste er für einen Monat in Haft, weil er an den Tienanmen-Demonstrationen zu Ehren des liberalen Politikers Zhou Enlai teilgenommen hatte. Nach einem Wahlaufruf für den in Ungnade gefallenen Deng Xiaoping ging er für zwei Jahre ins Gefängnis. Unermüdlich engagierte er sich weiter, unterstützte die Demokratiebewegungen der Jahre 1979 und 1989.
