German to English translations [PRO]
Law/Patents - Investment / Securities / Court case on causality
German term or phrase: Eventualbegründung
The only clue I get is "contingency grounds" but I don't find sufficient proof of this...

"The court also addressed the subsidiary argument that the travel originated in the employer's business because De Los Santos was transporting tools and equipment, as De Los Santos and Mr. Clark had
agreed that De Los Santos would bring a barrel to the work site that day to catch petroleum liquid that spilled while they worked on the well."

Apologies for my absence from this question - the day I handed this job in turned out to be a 20 hour working day and straight after that I had to move office, in the process damaging and losing my laptop. I choose to award points to this answer because I suggested this solution to the client, but I also sent along the other arguments in reference and for them to decide at their discretion. Thank you to all who contributed.

Asker: I think your explanation is correct, but I cannot find enough proof of the terminology, which is why I decided on Uta's answer. Thanks for your input.

alternative grounds

Explanation:
The Swiss German reference I found (see below) refers to a judgment that was based on two sets of grounds, the Hauptbegründung and Eventualbegründung. My guess is that an appropriate translation of these two terms would be "main grounds" and "alternative grounds" for the judgement.
