on an equal footing Explanation: It literally means at eye level or eye-to-eye and implies equality ie. both partners should have equal status. It may just be me, but I am not sure that translations using eye level/ eye-to-eye work in English so my suggestion is an alternative English idiom, which does, however, retain use of bodyparts. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 13 mins (2011-04-28 09:08:11 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I realise it is not always reliable but I ahve jsut found several examples of this being used as a translation on Linguee http://www.linguee.de/deutsch-englisch/search?sourceoverride... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 mins (2011-04-28 09:10:32 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Of course that also gives other alternatives like on equal terms on an equal to equal basis |
