An interesting dilemma!

I suppose that given that it follows after the discussion which concedes that ABC will be given the majority the point is that they want to ensure that they are given equal treatment in all other respects.

Thanks Nicola for your answer. What is slightly confusing is that in discussing the merger, the author has proposed a 50 : 50 ownership split but that the other party to the proposed deal should appoint the chairman who will have the deciding vote in the event of any disputes. The author concedes that this 'will give ABC the majority it seeks'. I.e. the equal split is overridden by who appoints the chairman. As such, I'm not entirely confident that it is right to talk of equality when something else is being proposed.
