German term or phrase: "Abteilungsleiter Fachstruktur"
This is a term often used in company announcements regarding changes in staff. The person given this title is a 'head of department', but has no HR responsibilities, e.g. approving vacation, etc. Until now, customers have asked us to leave the term in German, maybe putting an explanation in parentheses, but I feel this is an unsatisfactory solution, as it is not going to mean anything to an English native speaker. Any suggestions?
Helen
Departmental project manager
Explanation:
Are they a departmental manager, in charge of a certain project? I do think that if this is a company-specific term (I can't find any relevant hits on the Web for it) then it may well be best to leave it in German, with a gloss translation in parentheses.

Other ideas: Departmental and project manager, department/project manager.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will pass it on. I think we may have to go for the explanation in parentheses option in the end. There is just no snappy, compact translation for this term that also gets in the idea that this person does not have HR duties. "Departmental and project manager" is a close definition, though.
