Science - Geology / Geological survey
German term or phrase: Leineschottern
Translating a geological survey (German to English) and under the section on groundwater there is the following sentence:

I am struggling to find the English term(s) for 'Leineschottern'. Leo gives a few possible definitions of 'Schotter' from a geological point of view so perhaps 'crushed/broken stone'
http://dict.leo.org/ende/index_de.html#/search=Schotter&sear...

But as a term in its own right I'm at a loss and would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

A bit of gravel trivia:

Gravel sizes can vary dramatically, being anywhere from 1/8th of an inch (.32 centimeters) in diameter, up to 4 inches (10.16 centimeters) in diameter. Though these various types of gravel may be quite different, they all serve important functions. Size #10 gravel is typically considered to be the smallest of all gravel sizes, and generally is used as a base in paving. In contrast, size #57 gravel is used in the creation of retaining walls. Size #1 gravel is the largest of all gravel sizes, and is used primarily as a form of decoration in yards and parks.

The smallest of all gravel sizes is size #10, which is also commonly known as screenings gravel. This gravel is typically around 1/8th of an inch (.32 centimeters) in diameter, making it similar in appearance to coarse sand. Often, screenings gravel is used as the base for bricks, paving stones, and other similar items.

Yes, that makes sense as the geological survey is from a plant in Hanover. Thanks!

Leine brash

Explanation:
Schotter=brash 30 to 300 millimeter in diameter
Kies=gravel is the class below in terms of size
One of the things I actually seem to remember from my days at the school of "Erdwissenschaften" at the University in Göttingen, Lower Saxony. I am pretty sure about the differentiation between Schotter und Kies.

neutral  Yorkshireman: Gravel is seldom broken and angular. This is due to the action of water and abrasion in flowing water smoothing the edges. Brash is a mass of loose, broken, or angular fragments of rocks, resulting from weathering or in situ disintegration.

-> Correct. Your reference shows the differentiation of Schotter und Kies. Leineschotter is the name of the stratum, a conglomerate made up of different rocks and sand with different grain sizes, rounded by fluvial processes. I had doubts about brash myself.
