Would you please help me with the meaning of "artfremd" in the following sentence?

Artfremder Einsatz und Betrieb ohne Aufsicht sind nicht gestattet.

(The sentence refers to a DVD player.)

I was thinking in terms of "inappropriate" for "artfremd", but then again, would the sentence mean that so long as there is "Aufsicht", then such use is "gestattet"? :))

Explanation:
is fine

*Any inappropriate use and unsupervised operation are prohibited.*

The sentence does not imply that such use is fine as long as it's supervised. That would be very strange, indeed. :-)

use for a purpose other than that for which it was intended

There must be a shorter way of saying this, but that's what it means.
