This was the most helpful answer because kwatkins and her supporters taught me that "alternative" can be used more widely than I originally thought. But it's better to say "location" as it is only a temporary venue- now that's another possibility....

agree  Lancashireman: contingency (with a -cy) https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/continge... // Then I guess the EN-US adjective form of emergency is 'emergent'. Stay safe and get vaccinated pronto.

neutral  Lancashireman: It's a makeshift solution, not an approved 'centre', and they are doing exams, not tests (Covid, MOT etc), but apart from that, 'alternative' could work, especially with the weight of public opinion behind it.

non-registered [exam] venue

Explanation:
Should external circumstances dictate a change of venue, this must be within a 20km radius of the registered centre, and the examinations board must be informed.

regulärer Ort = registered venue/centre
abweichender Ort = non-registered venue

If it is 'abweichend' and up to 20km away, it can no longer be described as a 'centre'.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, Lancashireman I was tempted by this paricularly because you were thinking outside the box. But I have a little niggling doubt because this "other" location has to be indirectly registered, too. Telling the examination board about it in advance is tantamount to registration isn't it?
