German term or phrase: Einigelung
Die Ansiedlung von jungen Unternehmen schien ein probates Mittel gegen die zunehmende „Einigelung“ Berlins zu sein.

From a text harking back to the early 1980s in Berlin.

Frankly I am just dying to work the word "hedgehog" into this, but I think the customer might never speak to me again...;-)

As a grudging alternative I was thinking about "isolation" but I don't know if that quite hits the right note.

Any better ideas, anyone (with or without hedgehogs)???

(self-)containment
Explanation:
"self-containment" is also used as a political term (see source). "isolation" seems OK, though.

or sth. verbal with "shut off" or "dig in"

agree  Ute Wietfeld: I like digging in best, as einigeln is originally a military/defence term, I believe, ie an army forming a "hedgehog"

isolation

Explanation:
Actually, studying the sentence I think this would fit pretty well.

I've also been trying to think of how to use "hedgehog" ("hedgehoggery") but have already given up ...

agree  TonyTK: "self-isolation"? Hedgehogs always make me think of Monty Python - "DINSDALE!? DINSDALE!?"

hedgehog defense

Explanation:
If you really want to incorporate the hedgehog, the above is apparently a term used quite a bit in military terms and chess stratetgy.

I think, your own version is closer to the origin meaning of the "einiglung": shy, defensive
