German term or phrase: Absturzbrief
Hi

On a TV programme I was watching, someone made a face after reading a letter and said, "Es ist ein Absturzbrief".

Sorry I can't give any more context.

-> If not enunciated clearly, they sound very similar (I've transcribed a fair amount of documentary dialogue).)

agree  Ingeborg Gowans (X): see my reference yes, an Abschiedsbrief but written and presumably found later and preserved ' whether this fits into the documentary is another question

plane crash letter/419 letter/Nigerian letter

Explanation:
I think this may be a reference to one of the so-called 419 scam letters. One of the stories used is that someone who has just died in a plane crash deposited large sums of money in the bank leaving no will.

neutral  Lonnie Legg: Intriguing connection you've made, Alison--if the character was on the fraud squad (or otherwise fraud-involved), then you've likely hit the mark, otherwise not so likely.
