I would like to know a meaning of this term.
Saga
film d'auteur/auteur movie
Explanation:
Although almost unknown in Germany, Alain Fleischer, the photographic artist, filmmaker and author born in 1944 in Paris, is the most important cross-generic artist working in European film d'auteur cinema. He is crossing the traditional borders separating art and cinema, word and image, fiction and documentation, in many award-winning films. This first German retrospective of Fleischer's films will be rounded off by an exhibition of his large-format photographs, and a literary reading.

In the center of the film and cinema critique we find Jeremy, a Jean-Luc Godard in the making. Shot in black and white, his experimental film features close-ups of coffee cups and other "spectacular elements" that bring his girlfriend to exclaim that his film is "boring". The pedant movie critics he imagines seem to share the same opinion and his small film will only find success with a few intellectuals in a "film d'auteur" festival.

means so-to-say "made by excellent directors"

agree  Kim Metzger: Auteur theory maintains that directors like Hitchcock exert a level of creative control equivalent to the author of a literary work. http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-french-phrases-used-by-...

-> I love Malle ...........xxxx... I love "Damage" (sorry, I ignore its French title....) 'Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive.'

agree  Richard Benham: I think the defining thing about this kind of film is that it's a "Joe Blow" film; so it's regarded as the work essentially of one person (the director), assisted by others.

Explanation:
non-commercial
that's the general idea
It's an author's movie. It's not a Hollywood product. It's not in the same galaxy as the ones we were talking about.

Film l'auteur

Explanation:
Wikepedia provides the following definition:

I.e. an "Autorenfilm" has the following characteristics:

* script author and director are identical
* script is most likely not an adaptation
* rarely produced on behalf of large studios
* film makers often see them as pieces of art with a literary expression

Reply to Asker's Note:

Not necessarily as an "Independent film" may have its script from a different author. I guess that's why "Autorenfilm" or "Film l'auteur is a category of its own ... It is "independent" though in the sense of not being financed by a large production company.

disagree  Richard Benham: Attention à l'orthographe : "film d'auteur", et non pas "l' auteur".//Someone else's getting it wrong is no excuse for your doing likewise. This is supposed to be a site for professional translators, not professional copiers and pasters.
