Что касается произношения, то, на мой взгляд, к русской традиции она не имеет ни малейшего отношения, а скорее к местным языкам, франкопровансальскому, окситанскому, для которых характерно произношение каждой гласной в буквосочетании. Происходит название от латинского "petra" - камень, скала.
