Balayage du trafic : c’est la largeur sur laquelle peut évoluer la roue d’un véhicule sur une voie. Si la voie est étroite et canalisée (entre deux murs par exemple) le balayage est faible, le véhicule roule toujours au même endroit. Si la voie est large et sans bord, le véhicule est susceptible de rouler sur une largeur plus grande.

Please don't get too technical :-) I'm way out of my field here. I was thinking purely in terms of language (what balayer can mean) and my own driving experience. But, yes, it looks sthg like that. Your ex. talks about not leaving the lane, I was thinking more in terms of getting too close to the car in front (because of the distances mentioned in the source text), but I suspect that in both cases, there must be some sort of clever technology at work which prevents cars from being where they shouldn't be.

Of course, I agree with BD Finch about how small these distances are if applied to vehicles that follow each other. It could work if they're traveling slowly (it's an access road) - ever tried getting your car on one of the cross-Channel ferry-boats? That certainly tests my driving skills!

<p>The distances mentioned make me think that balayage could be about "scanning"/"sweeping electronically" in front of the vehicles. Balayer can be used in that sense, even with different distances. More examples: "flux logistiques+balayage".<p> The previous examples are about vehicles that have been previously equipped, which may not apply in your case, but I know there is also a type of technology which "monitors" (balaie) vehicles in the Mont Blanc Tunnel (I certainly was several times), where vehicles are canalisés too and drivers get warnings when their vehicles are too close to each other. Would all or any of that make sense in your case?

The distances seem too small for distances between vehicles. I think they are more likely to be the distances between the vehicles and anything to the side of their route. See the safe distances (1 m in built-up areas and 1.5 m in rural areas) prescribed by the Code de la route for vehicles to allow when passing pedestrians or cyclists.
