French term or phrase: armoire de sous-répartition optique
Hello,

The term appears in an article about a fibre network rollout project.

"Nous poserons des armoires de sous-répartition optique (SRO) et nous procéderons au tirage/déroulage des câbles à fibres optiques..."

Are these referred to as subdistributor cabinets? Or secondary distribution frames?

Any help much appreciated.

neutral  B D Finch: Though this is a technical reference, it is written by somebody who is very clearly not a native speaker of English and who makes numerous errors.

neutral  Michael Davies: I completeley agree with B.D. Finch's assessment of the reference text. It looks like a very poor translation from some other language and is definitely NOT written by a person with technical knowledge of the subject.

  -> Thanks Gilou

agree  Michael Davies: I agree that this could also be a correct translation - depending on whether the 'SRO' is indoors or outdoors. In the latter case, see my alternative suggestion.

  -> Thanks Michael. Yes, you're right, it could possibly be outdoors and on the utility company side of the meter.

agree  Tony M: Although the 'sous-' part is actually important and cannot just be omitted.

  -> Thanks Tony. Yes, you are right: insert "sub-".

street cabinet

Explanation:
Although the reference text is extremely (!) poorly written and lacks precision, I understand it to refer to cabinets, which can be installed at the roadside, used to provide access to the optical fibre lines.

(I have just realised that the reference text I referred to concerns the optical cross-connect cabinet reply - and NOT the asker's reference. This does not, however, change my suggested translation.

If the cabinet is located outdoors, then it could be 'fibre-optic street cabinet'. (Recognising the validity of B.D. Finch's comment below).

Example sentence(s):
  • The street cabinet is a point where the building operator provides other operators with access to the lines. (p.7)
  • Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) involves running fibre optic cables from the telephone exchange or distribution point to the street cabinets which then connect to a standard phone line to provide broadband.

neutral  Tony M: Although that is one possibility in certain contexts, there is nothing in Asker's context here to suggest this, and if wrong, it would be a glaring error.

  -> Yes, Tony, I agree - see my comment to B.D. Finch's suggestion. It is up to katiej to decide which alternative is the most correct in the context of her source text.

neutral  B D Finch: I find that rather too vague. It's the sort of term one could use on a second/subsequent mention, but the first mention needs to be more specific.
