Context: a text which talks about Islam in the context of French society
Sentence: "Actuellement, trois mosquées bénéficient d’un agrément donné par le ministère de l’Agriculture sur proposition du ministère de l’Intérieur pour délivrer des cartes de sacrificateurs religieux. Ces sacrificateurs rendent un service qui est rémunéré par les abattoirs dont le produit sert au financement des mosquées qui en bénéficient et des associations qui leur sont proches."

From what I gather form the context of the text as a whole, this relates to the privilege of certifying halal meat which is only given to a select few. The most frequent translation I find for "sacrificateur" in a Biblical context is "priest/high priest", but in this case it relates to Muslim religious figures who are given a sort of licence to certify halal meat. Would we use the term "sacrificer" in English? From what I gather (although I'm not certain) they "certify"/"bless" the process rather than physically perform the sacrifice themselves.

Any expert input would be much appreciated!

It is tempting to suggest 'halal slaughterman' (or even 'slaughterhouse butcher'), but the original, although specifically about Islam, does not use the term 'halal' here, just 'religieux". And of course, 'religious slaughterer' is a false friend here. 'Ritual' is a good choice.

'Butcher' generally conjures up images of a guy selling meat over the counter, but the term is also used in abbatoirs/slaughterhouses. You might like to consider chekcing out job offers in a location appropriate for your target country to see what term is actually used.

agree  Charles Davis: I don't think "religious slaughterers" would be wrong. "Ritual slaughterers" is more usual, however. // Well, for that matter you can perform a ritual without being religious. These phrases have established meanings. Religious slaughter is nec. a rite.
