French to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Printing & Publishing
French term or phrase: signes
Context: This is from a contract between an author and a publisher to publish a book.

Il est convenu que le manuscript commandé comportera 250 feuillets dactylographiés double interlignage de 1.500 signes.

Note: This term has come up before and the closest translation given was "characters", but a book would have more than 1,500 characters. Any help would be appreciated.

Explanation:
As Phil says, it does indeed mean 'character' — what is not entirely clear is how big these 'feuillets' are, but 1,500 characters would be about right for an average page of circa 250 words + av. 6 ch/ wd, especially using a monospaced typewriting font + double line spacing.

It is obvious from the FR syntax that this work will comprise '250 feuillets ... de 1.500 signes' — there is no way one can read that as being the character count for the whole work.
