French term or phrase: donner à lire
Chacun devrait savoir, pourtant, que lorsque nous regardons une photographie, elle signifie d’abord que ce qui a permis qu’elle existe a irrémédiablement disparu. Il faut continuer à donner à lire Roland Barthes.

Does "donner à lire" here just essentially mean to read..? Or to interpret. How could I express this?

Thanks.

Explanation:
IMO.

Or perhaps, in a classroom situation, "assign." (Barthes had some thoughts about art, so it's possible that this might suit the context.)

Roland Barthes gives us food for thought

Explanation:
Hello

I know that this translation is far from the original in words but it seems to me to best describe the real idea behind 'donner à lire' which some people have taken a bit literally if I may dare to say so.
