Hi Tony,
Off-line is worth looking at. Not sure if there is any connection between the 3mm hole and the marking. The plates are about 10 x 20cm in size. The mark is on the x-ray film.

Could this be the use of 'cold' meaning 'off-line'? i.e. perhaps here the X-ray plate is marked separately, before being put into place for the actual shot. Do you know if this is X-ray marking, on some kind of written mark?

Another possible idea: since 'hot' can sometimes mean the area exposed to radioactivity, could this simply mean 'outside the normal exposure area'?
