takes pride of place amongst the illuminations chosen as a setting for the portraits Explanation: I can only imagine that 'industrialisation' is somehow represented by an image of some sort and that the design mentioned in the passage includes some sort of peripheral hand-drawn or painted illumination-like border or surround to encompass the portraits mentioned. Does this make any sense whatsoever? This is really a case where a bit more context would help.
