"Motivés par une inquiétude fondamentalement humaine, celle d’établir leur position dans l’espace et le temps, ces « visualistes, » comme je les ai nommés, aussi abstraits puissent-ils paraître au premier coup d’œil, s’appuient en fait sur les archétypes spatiaux que sont la mappemonde ou l’axe X/Y. En les manipulant, ils tentent de produire, tout comme un architecte ou un paysagiste, des espaces esthétiquement déchiffrables, riches de trames narratives et emprunts du sens du temps."

Explanation:
..... "whatever that means" I am tempted to say. Have tried to be as 'ronflant' as the French.
BTW, it should be "empreints" and not "emprunts"

agree  Damien Lacroix: just a doubt about "meaning of time" for "sens du temps". I think "sens" is used in its meaning of "direction" (architectural or mathematical background :"axe X/Y"). So i would suggest something like "tide of time"; or "continuum of time"

-> I think you're possibly right... in any case, I do feel the original is pretentiously put, and "continuum of time", IMO, fits extremely well with the tone :-) Thanks for your enlightened comment, Pyren !

agree  Helen Shiner: how about 'replete with a sense of the passing of time/time passing'? A landscape artist, for instance, records the land at a particular time/season, and architecture is of its time, too. I don't share your irritation; 'sense of time' is what the FR has.

-> As you can see from above, the 'sens du temps' is not too clear to me... Trying to conquer my irritation at this type of writing, maybe necessary to leave the EN as vague as the FR.Thanks Helen :-)/Tant mieux if only I find the phrasing overblown :-)

agree  Silvia Brandon-Pérez: I like the original and your translation... I don't find it pretentious, but rather poetic.

-> Thanks silviantonia :-) I will have to accept that I'm perhaps being rather grumpy, then, about the pretentiousness!
