For Aristotle on being and genus |
|
ultimate subject of predication Explanation: The author is saying that Plotinus views ousía much the same way as Aristotle does, and refers to Aristotle's hupokeimenon, which means the 'ultimate subject of predication' - the thing by which all effects are explained. So this last phrase 'sujet dernier auquel rapporter la diversité des accidents' is, I think, intended to define more clearly what the author sees as the 'ousía prote aristotélicienne' (since Aristotle says many different things at different times which are open to different interpretations!) Reference: For Aristotle on being and genus Reference information: Agree with Sophie on the meaning of the phrase, if it is the relationship of being to genus that is confusing (ousia not being first in relation to the genus), there is some useful explanation here: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/aristotle-categories/ Under section 2, "The ten-fold division", there are a couple of useful paragraphs beginning "What then is Aristotle's second classificatory system?..." |
