French term or phrase: Programmatique
From an academic article on perfume:

programmatic
Explanation:
You've misread the text - it says programmatique, not programmique. It's the same word in English.

I don't think you need a synonym - it means that creativity is subject to limitations imposed by the way the perfume is made.

Thanks for your help! After much googling, I concede that "programmatic" is used in English as well, esp. by academic philisophers.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks! it was a typo. But what does "programmatic" mean in this context? I found that too, but it doesn't make sense to me. Can you suggest a synonym?

Asker: Ok, but what is the text saying about the manifesto (that's the part that interests me)? A bit of background -- a group of perfumers drafted a manifesto calling for recognition of perfume as an art form.
