i.e. the shaft, which is presumably round, is machined square where this thing fits on, and the thing has a correspondinly square hole in the middle. Other attachments could be triangular or other multiple plane facets, or a toothed (splined) engagement.

It is also possible that "à carré" means "directly" (or "carrément" in the vernacular!), given that in what follows it is possible that "à carré" is in opposition to " un rouage "démultiplicateur" ou "réducteur"

Si l'on faisait agir la roue de palier de la masse oscillante, le segment denté ou le cliquet directement sur le rochet fixé " à carré " sur l'arbre de barillet, le ressort de barillet opposerait à la masse oscillante une résistance beaucoup trop grande et le remontage ne s'opérerait pas.
On intercale donc, entre la masse oscillante et le rochet, un dispositif constitué généralement par un rouage "démultiplicateur" ou "réducteur".
