literally; perhaps here, 'reviving' would be better ('reviving an ancient tradition' etc.) — though I'd still want to look at rephrasing it.

neutral  Tony M: I think the imagery is slightly different: "given a new lease of life" rather suggests 'repurposing' or 'up-cycling'; whereas I think this is more a case here of simply returning something to use that had fallen out of use.
