French term or phrase: bague
Hi, I am translating an extract from a report on an incident at a nuclear reactor (it's a test translation, before anyone worries!). Part of the report consists of a list of findings resulting from investigations into the incident. The term I am struggling with here is 'bague' in the context of 'le système de butée basse', as follows:

'L'exploitant a observé des traces de frottement à l’intérieur de la bague haute du système de butée basse'

I have been unable to establish whether I can render 'bague' as 'ring', 'collar', 'band' etc and would be grateful if anyone could shed light on this.

The material surrounding this sentence reads as follows:

'L'exploitant a observé:

• des traces de frottement sur une génératrice de la pièce de centrage de la barre incriminée et sur celle d’une autre barre,
• des traces transversales de frottement à l’intérieur du tube-guide, 400 mm au-dessus du bas du tube,
• des variations de diamètre du tube-guide relativement importantes (cependant aucune tolérance n’est spécifiée sur les plans du référentiel de sûreté),

I note the attached previous response to a similar query (http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/tech_engineering... but am not sure whether it is the same type of 'bague' as mine.

Thanks very much
Louisa

ring

Explanation:
Per EDF and Areva glossaries (sorry not online)
ring -> bague
collar -> collet, collerette, collier

band seems inappropriate, seen in these glossaries only in dead band, frequancy band etc meaning

See report in reference, with a similar case of "freinage des grappes en fin de course", the context you give does not let me determine whether the "barres" are "barres de combustible" or "barres de contrôle", both can be lowered, but the details of "butée basse", "tube guide" etc depend on the type of the reactor

See some "tubes guides" on second reference
and crayons combustibles here if these are "barres de combustible" in these "tubes guides"

collar

Explanation:
locking collar
In this case the "barre incriminée" refers to the "barre de compensation", i.e. adjuster - a reactivity control device consisting of a removable solid absorber element, vertical guide tube (tube-guide) and a drive mechanism. Adjusters are used to shape the neutron flux for optimum reactor power and fuel burnup.
