French term or phrase: étalonnage
Usually I would translate this as "calibration", but in this text regarding the analysis of a coal production plant it frequently appears alongside the French term "calibrage" and I'm unsure as to how to differentiate between the two in English.

e.g.

English translation:calibration (and definitions)
Explanation:

Calibrage Gauging (adjustment of an instrument subsequent to calibration (étalonnage))

agree  Tom Bishop: I agree "étalonnage" = "calibration". But in metrology, which appears to be the context, "calibrage" would be "gauging" (UK) or "gaging" (US).

neutral  iulian dobreanu: from those definitions results very clear:"calibration" is used for production purposes. "L'analiseur" de l'asker is used in a laboratory to establish physical and chemical properties of coal, it is a metrologic problem, Tom is right: gauging.Than Sylvia.
