toucheurs de hanche

English translation: We need to incorporate hip-testing into newborn care

Science - Livestock / Animal Husbandry / Clinical examination (human)
French term or phrase: toucheurs de hanche
I was unsure what field to select, as this term is part husbandry/part human medicine...

Taken from an article discussing the history of screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip in (human) children. One of the forerunners was an Italian called Ortolani, he of the eponymous "Ortolani test" (a test performed by manipulating the hip joint manually). My phrase for translation is the part in bold below:

[Ortolani] a compris tout l’intérêt de ce signe d’examen pour traiter précocément les enfants, et surtout il a été à l’initiative d’une véritable croisade pédagogique en Italie et même en Europe ; « il nous faut devenir des toucheurs de hanche » disait-il !

Toucheur: Marchand ayant coutume de juger l'état d'engraissement des animaux en les palpant.

It doesn't help that he presumably said this phrase in Italian (which I do not speak), and either way I cannot find an English equivalent for "toucheur" in the livestock sense. Which is making it even harder to think of translation solutions for this phrase in context...

All contributions welcome, thank you.

English translation:We need to incorporate hip-testing into newborn care
Explanation:
I think since he developed a simple way to screen for hip dislocation in newborns that can be performed anywhere without any equipment, he was simply stating that doctors should be incorporating this simple maneuver into their regular care for infants.

We meaning doctors.

I think "toucheurs de hanche" is a bad translation from Italian where he meant that doctors should be "hip manipulators" when it comes to newborn care.

hands-on judgment

Explanation:
I think that you will have to abandon hope of a direct translation and go for one that captures the idea and, as far as possible, the register.

Asker: Yes! Much better, i was stuck on finding ideas surrounding "feeling/touching", none of which were right.

neutral  writeaway: keep in mind that the French is probably a poor translation from the Italian original. None of your English refs are in the actual context.

-> Why assume it is "a poor translation"? The meaning seems to be that pediatricians needed to develop diagnostic skills based on what they feel when doing a hip manipulation: a partially subjective (manual), art rather than using numerical test results.

neutral  Gabrielle Leyden: Did he really say all that? "We need to become hip testers (or manipulators)" would be closer in style. Why don't you ask Italian-speaking colleagues to help you track down the original?

-> I speak sub-fluent Italian and read through all of the interviews with him and articles on him that I could find. I was unable to find this quote or anything in a similar vein. If an Italian translator could chime in, that would be great.
