French term or phrase: sous-jacents économiques
This is from an article about sustainable investment. I'm hung up on "sous-jacents économiques que sont les entreprises" which seems to be saying that companies are the economic underlyings, unless I'm misreading this, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

My attempt:
Issues of sustainability are becoming so crucial for the economic underlyings, i.e. companies, that senior executives must now seriously integrate them into their management.

Any thoughts?
Thanks.

This is turning the syntax round, but in my view, it conveys the meaning.

disagree  Daryo: that's not what is said in this text - it's about "the underlying economy/economic actors [=companies]" that "lie behind /under" s.t. else previously mentioned. The economy CAN NOT at the same be doing "the underlying" and being the layer on top?

The challenges of sustainability (/ sustainable development) are becoming so crucial for companies - the implicated / underlying economic actors - that companies' leadership must now seriously include it (=sustainability) in their politique / management strategy ...

That's the idea.

Obviously, as there are no mentions in this sentence of in relation to what these companies / actors in the economy are "sous-jacents / underlying / behind ..." it makes sense ONLY combined with preceding text.

with more context, only "underlying" works.

If you take the trouble to read the whole "compte-rendu" you might find out that "ecomomy" and "society" are "underlying" behind what is the main topic of the meeting.
