A news article on the Executive Life case (illegal fronting arrangements in the acquisition of a US insurance company by French financiers). This article (Le Monde, 1/24/04) is about Hénin's claim that the US prosecution reneged on its agreements with him to testify in exchange for some immunity.

H claims to have been/was apparently the object of a last-ditch démarche...


I like last-ditch because it means done finally in desperation to avoid defeat, failure, war, etc, and démarche is used in English, too,(see Webster's or OED)to mean a formal appeal, protest etc - I like its 'official' aspect.
