French term or phrase: ultime démarche
A news article on the Executive Life case (illegal fronting arrangements in the acquisition of a US insurance company by French financiers). This article (Le Monde, 1/24/04) is about Hénin's claim that the US prosecution reneged on its agreements with him to testify in exchange for some immunity.

or, better:

it would seem he was talked into a last resort approach

puisque \"to talk someone into doing something\" équivaut au sens de suggérer, proposer, convaincre.....

last-ditch démarche

Explanation:
H claims to have been/was apparently the object of a last-ditch démarche...

I like last-ditch because it means done finally in desperation to avoid defeat, failure, war, etc, and démarche is used in English, too,(see Webster's or OED)to mean a formal appeal, protest etc - I like its 'official' aspect.

was given a final opportunity

Explanation:
was given a final opportunity [ie to get off the hook himself]

--------------------------------------------------

demarche means the cops approached him with a deal; you testify against Pinault and you won;t be charged...

He was given a final opportunity....

Even if you don\'t like this translation it sounds English and is in the proper register and style

FINAL: Mr. Henin was supposedly given a final opportunity, saying: \"His sentence\"

The English requires the saying to make it journalistically acceptable. You can\'t just use a colon in English.,

Cheers

In mid-September 2003, after the first U.S.-France agreement was signed, Mr. Hénin, who was apparently given a final opportunity, stated, \"They offered me a very good, non-specified deal, in exchange for testifying on behalf of the prosecution against Mr. Pinault.\"

Opportunity works because it is explained by his statement.

The only odd thing is the non-specifié....I admit that non-specified does not make sense in English but don\'t know what it would mean...
