French term or phrase: tenue de position
as opposed to "la tenue de compte conservation" (custody and management") per the RGAMF (Règlement Générale de l'Autorité des Marchés Financiers). Holding of a position? What would be a smoother rendering of this in English? Thanks in advance!

English translation:position keeping
Explanation:
... is the 'official' translation, as opposed to 'custody account keeping'. If you want something smoother, you will have to give up looking for a noun phrase and reword the whole sentence, which you haven't given.

The fund custodian must do both: it must keep track of the assets of the fund in question, and it must maintain a register of all open positions in those assets. Be careful with the word "management": the assets in question are "under management" by the fund manager ("portfolio management company"), NOT by the custodian.

The relevant article of the RG AMF is 323-4 (in Book III). The entire General Regulation [sic] is available in French and in English translation in PDFs on the AMF website, linked below.

dépositaire = custodian (NOT "depositary") in this context in US English.

holding or maintaining a position

Explanation:
"Holding a position" is good and I think the best way to say this. Sometimes you hear 'maintaining depending on the context.

From Wikipedia:
"the cost of holding a position in the underlying security, including interest and dividends,...."

neutral  rkillings: But in this case, only *holding in custody*. The assets are actually détenus (held) by someone else: owned by the fund entity, managed by the fund manager, kept in custody by the fund custodian.

-> I don't think there is enough context to assume 'holding in custody' because she mentions it isn't like "tenue de compte conservation' which is what custodial is.

neutral  joehlindsay: This might be right, 'position keeping' is the monitoring of a dealer's position, which might be what is being done. Really do need the whole sentence which might need to be reworded for natural English.
