I know what you mean and have been trying to think of a solution. I did google "public finance officer" and it doesn't have many hits. I think in the UK at least, this wouldn't be stated in the actual job title but it would be obvious from the context. E.g. Someone's email signature would be "Finance Officer - Southampton City Council" (for example), so you would know that they are working in the public sector from the organisation they work for

yes, good point. On that same page it says "Il peut évoluer vers le grade de contrôleur 1er classe, contrôleur principal, inspecteur des finances publiques, via la promotion interne ou par concours". So "officer" sounds good... or maybe "agent"?

Officer would be a more junior role? Whereas Inspector sounds a bit more senior - you would need to have some seniority to be inspecting things I would have thought?

Thanks for these suggestions. This seems to be, at the entry level anyway, quite a junior position. As you can see in the link I give, the starter gross salary is only €1600. This seems slightly incongruous with the title "auditor" (less so perhaps with "accountant"). Personally I'm inclined to translate contrôleur as "inspector". Hmmm.

Hi Mpoma, I don't know this field at all well and I imagine they'll be answers from specialist translators, but I think "tax inspector" is maybe a little narrow for the job as described, maybe "government auditor"? (See Termium and the UN interpreters' document).

I don't think tax inspector covers it. Your link shows that the role can be quite varied, not just about tax.
