It is a celebration of hedonism. See Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem, "A Lovely Light:" "My candle burns at both its ends/It will not last the night/But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends/It gives a lovely light."
This is from memory of college days more than fifty years ago, so perhaps not absolutely accurate, but close, I think.
