de type répartition ou à côte fixe, fixed return or distribution Explanation: Say 100,000 people each bet 10 euros on a football match, 60,000 betting team A will win, 40,000 that team B will win. The total bet is thus 1,000,000 euros. Now, team B wins (40,000 betters). Two options: 1) fixed return: when the bets were taken, the betting agency undertook to pay double on winning bets. Each winning better therefore gets 20 euros back. 20 x 40,000 = 800,000 euros: the betting agency makes a clean 20% profit. Had the agency promised a different return, it might have made a bigger or smaller profit. 2) "distribution" (I understand the concept, but don't know the correct word): the betting agency takes a 20% cut, say, on the total bet, leaving 800,000 euros to be shared out among the winning betters. The payout in this case is exactly the same as with a fixed return, but the profit is always the same. Were its cut only 10%, the betters in this case would get more than double their money: 900,000 euros divided by 40,000 winning betters = 22.5 euros. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 41 mins (2005-07-11 21:50:56 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Instead of \"distribution\", how about \"pooled return\" or even \"pari mutuel\" (out of the frying pan, into the fire!) which IS used in English. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr 19 mins (2005-07-11 22:28:56 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Just send me 10,000 dollars in a plain brown package and I\'ll tell you how to make money on the lottery, etc. Hint: it has a lot to do with not actually buying tickets or backing the geegees. |
