This occurs in the context of a general description of the components of light fittings public buildings:

"Les vantelles, qui protègent l'œil des éblouissements en empêchant la vue directe de la lampe. Le diffuseur ou protecteur{ut2}qui remplace parfois les vantelles et protège la lampe de l'ambiance. On parle aussi de "vasque".

My question is in two parts:

1) Is this best omitted on the grounds that it refers to French linguistic usage and is irrelevant when the text is translated into English?

2) If it does relate to something that makes sense in English, how should it be translated?

My own feeling is that it might as well be omitted.

I agree with you — I think it can just be omitted, since it is merely a FR linguistic variant and is not describing something materially different.

I think 'shade' describes a different item: intended to restrict the distribution of light, whereas a diffuser generally broadens it (as well as reducing glare)
