I am beginning to think that this must be a typo, because I cannot find any trace of this word.

I think the spelling should be cartérisation. I'm posting a Kudoz reference to the same question from Italian to English (in Italian: carterizzazione).
The second reference (in French) also has pictures.
Here's the description it gives:

Cartérisation

Protéger l'homme des fureurs de la machine en action,
L'adapter aux normes, mouvement pertétuel de l'évolution.

La cartérisation regroupe toutes les protections industrielles notamment la protection de machines et le carrénage.
