I'm posting a Kudoz reference to the same question from Italian to English (in Italian: carterizzazione). The second reference (in French) also has pictures. Here's the description it gives: Cartérisation Protéger l'homme des fureurs de la machine en action, L'adapter aux normes, mouvement pertétuel de l'évolution.
