In principe betekent appoint iets dat erbij komt, een aanvulling of toevoegsel (zie Van Dale), maar die vertaling lijkt niet logisch in de context van de geciteerde zin.

In officiële regelgeving heb ik als vertaling voor appoint gevonden een toegift (hier geen logische vertaling).

De uitdrukking faire l'appoint betekent bijpassen of met gepast geld betalen (Van Dale). In officiële regeling gebruikt men voor deze uitdrukking ook al eens volgende woorden het verschil bijpassen.
De term verschil als vertaling lijkt me dan ook het overwegen waard.
