In Latvian all names of foreign geographical locations are transcribed, unfortunately I don't know how to pronounce this. Will be grateful for any help.

neutral  Antti Pyykkönen: Hmm. I otherwise agree on the pronunciation, but German DOES NOT have an "ä" sound like the Finnish one, just a letter "ä" = a-umlaut.

-> You are quite right - German ä sound is closer to Finnish e.

agree  Jussi Rosti: ä in pronounced something like [æ], or close to english a in the word hat

-> Sounds like a good approximation!

agree  Susanna Neiglick: I agree with Jussi and Antti. British pronunciation of 'hat' has got the right ä-sound.
