acknowledgement of receipt Explanation: My Finnish-English law dictionary translates it as "acknowledgement of receipt, acceptance certificate, certificate of receipt, inspection certificate". It doesn't mean VAT as in value-added tax, which is usually ALV (arvonlisävero) in Finnish. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 mins (2007-09-07 12:15:58 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I just translated "vastaanottotodistus", but I'm sure you're right, Marju! Though why say VAT numero if you can say ALV numero? |

There is first an intra-company abbreviation "VAT", then its explanation in parenthesis (VAstaanotTotodistus). First, it is quite common to use this kind of three-letter abbreviations, especially in programming/bookkeeping applications. Second, it is also quite common to add the translation in parenthesis, which also shows that the writer does not expect even the Finnish reader to know what for VAT is here. The fact that VAT means “value added tax” in English doesn’t count at all here, this is all in Finnish.
